How to correctly determine the dimensions of the windows – an overview of popular standards
Building a house involves the purchase of windows. Often such an investment also occurs when we want to replace old windows with newer ones with better parameters. Currently, we have a choice of unusual and typical dimensions of windows. Contrary to appearances, this is not a statutory standardization, but a contractual list of the most popular sizes of windows installed in residential construction.
The history of windows goes back to the time when people actually forged holes in the walls to let the daylight fall into the rooms. At that time, the “windows” were ordinary openings obscured by sheets of material or leather. Later, wooden and metal frames were introduced.
The first PVC windows appeared in Poland in the mid-1970s. So much earlier they appeared in the United States and Western European countries.
However, for the first time typical window dimensions began to be used in the 1930s. This conventional division applied to wooden windows. Today, standard window dimensions are used by manufacturers of all windows.
Classifications of windows for residential buildings
Windows installed in residential buildings can be divided in several ways. The first division includes windows due to the material from which they are made.
In this case we mention:
Wooden windows – profiles are made of glued laminated wood or solid wood. The most commonly used wood species are: pine, spruce, oak, ash and meranti. Wooden windows, due to the use of natural raw material, must be properly protected against the effects of weather conditions, including mainly moisture.
Aluminum windows – aluminum windows are distinguished by a frame made of aluminum. Here, there are rather no standard window sizes, because aluminum works great in large formats. That is why aluminum windows will perfectly match modern buildings, in which we deal with large-format glazing.
PVC windows (or PVC windows) – PVC plastic windows are currently the most popular type of windows. When listing standard window sizes, we usually mean PVC windows, although they also include windows made of wood. Their constructions are always splendid. They are resistant to all atmospheric, biological and chemical factors. In addition, they are distinguished by excellent thermal and sound insulation. Another advantage of PVC windows is the lack of maintenance.
Division of windows by way of opening:
Permanent – paying attention to the dimensions of the windows, we also look at how they are opened. Appropriate fittings are responsible for this process. Fixed fittings are most often used when window dimensions include three-part windows. Then one of these parts does not open at all.
Tilt – typical window dimensions usually apply to windows with tilt fittings. We are talking about a wing tilted from top to bottom.
Tilt – standard window dimensions also apply to windows that contain a tilt leaf. This means that the wing opens to the side.
Tilt and turn – PVC windows and windows made of wood that have a combination of the previous two fittings are also available. Then we are talking about tilt and turn windows, i.e. open in two ways. Also check this article for a comparison of double and triple glazed windows.
Among the windows you can also mention those that are distinguished by special technical parameters, namely:
Passive windows – standard window dimensions also apply to passive windows. These are windows that are distinguished by increased thermal insulation. Passive windows are recommended for energy-saving buildings. Their heat factor should remain at a lower level than 0.8 W / m2 * K. Passive windows can have profiles made of plastic, wood or aluminum.
